Ashland Doel produces fine chemicals for the construction, food & pharma Industry. Continuous Improvement Is deeply rooted within their structure, always striving for better products to foresee In the needs of their customers.
In order to expedite this continuous Improvement mentality, they have a skilled Engineering team that executes projects to Improve the quality for their products, the safety of their workers & the Impact on the environment.
These projects can be as little as changing some open/ close valves by regulating types or the Installation of a new In line quality measurement device. But they can also be as big as the revamp & improvement of their functional safety system In their entire factory.
Over the last 2 years I have worked with Bennet, they have shown to be a reliable partner to work with. They support when necessary both In technical as In other parts of the job.

THE PROJECT
Functional safety improvements
A big part of my role inside the Engineering team, Is to execute the E&I part of the functional safety projects. This starts In the basic design engineering phase by preparing the scope based on P&ID's and lists that were built by process engineers.
In the detailed engineering phase, instrumentation is selected based on numerous criteria that stem from internal procedures & good engineering practice. These Instruments should fit the functional safety requirements and should be suited to withstand the harsh conditions Inside of the pipes at the Doel plant. The electrical design Is a part of this phase as well. This Includes the design of Instrument loops, but also the cabinet design & network design.
The construction & commissioning phase Is the most stressful phase, but also the most beautiful phase. All kinds of people working so hard to achieve one common goal. All the things loose Items that come together to form one big working mechanism.
APPROACH
The role of an Engineer here is very varied. Not one day Is the same as the previous one. The planning of resources, the ordering of materials, the designing of the Installations, It's all Included In the package. Not one day Is the same as the previous one.
Communication Is a very Important part of the job. Making sure that all the different stakeholders have their noses In the same direction & have all the Information they need Is a big task, but an Important one.
